THE BERLIN WALL / Die Berliner Mauer

It was in the evening of 9 November 1989, 25 years ago, the beginning of the end for the Berlin Wall (Die Berliner Mauer). 
A piece of the famous wall was offered to Montreal and it is exposed at the World Trade Center. 
The wall was erected on August 12, 1961 for a distance of over 170 km and was protected by 231 posts and 132 fortified bunkers. At first the wall was composed only of barbed son but it was reinforced by cement blocks in the late 60s in two stages and in 1976 a fourth step of solidification was built with reinforced concrete. Several artists have benefited from these walls to graffiti and write texts of protest. 
The piece exhibited in Montreal comes from walls erected during construction in 1976.

CANADIAN PARLIAMENT AND DOWNTOWN ABBEY...

One could compare the buildings of the Canadian Parliament Hill castles Downtown Abbey. Full of small private rooms with nooks and crannies. One member has even been found half-naked in his underpants there several years in the corridors while playing with his secretary in his office. They had heard the noise and came out of the office to see if there was anyone but the door closed on them... 
Parliament is like a rustic hotel but a hundred times bigger! To access you need the employee identification card, which then becomes a sort of catch-all hotel key... 
Speaking of Downtown Abbey, the rape scene in season 4 is much like what is currently debated in various media about women remaining silent over the abuse they suffered. Anna the maid in Downtown Abbey was raped by a butler and the first thing she asked from the woman who found her was a promise to secrecy and especially to cover the event while there are tens of guests at the castle. We know of course later in the season 5, that the rapist will be judged according to the law of retaliation. The action in Downtown Abbey is around 1922. 
Here in Canada real life, the year 1929 was famous for the rape occurred in the office of the Canadian Parliament by MP Auger of a young girl Franco-Ontarian of 17 who had come to meet him to request a job. JUSTIN TRUDEAU AND COURAGE ...

Thomas Mulcair accused Justin Trudeau to have unveiled to the public the harassment situation and sent out the two Liberal members for unacceptable action with no respect for the two female NDP Members! Mulcair's accusations could easily turn against him... 
Indeed, we learn that the NDP leader was well aware for some time of the alleged acts, but he preferred not to get involved out of respect for the victims... 
According to me, "Silence in front of the abuse is never the solution! Justin also speaks about it in his autobiography when he recalls the time he was a student and he was trying to fight against abuse. He tells how the institutions are shy in front of abuse.
In my book, either it is a Justin, a Thomas or another person; anyone who stand up and confront those who abuse is a hero is the one who is silent is a coward! " 
Congratulations to Justin for his courage to speak!

THE FUTURE OF RADIO-CANADA - AN ELECTION ISSUE FOR 2015

One solution to save the CBC from closure: make an election issue in the next federal election on October 2015! 
It is clear that if Stephen Harper is re-elected that the transformation of Radio-Canada will continue according to the game plan of the current prime minister. To break this plan would require another politician, as Justin Trudeau (I'm pro-Justin ...) or Thomas Mulcair, to be elected Prime Minister and that the latter is firmly committed during the campaign to restore more money and a new direction to the state society. 
CBC would benefit greatly from a new president with ideas like a Jean-François Lépine rather than the current president as Hubert Lacroix. But no such action could be applied nor possible if there is not an election issue around the CBC. No election issue; no survival...

JEAN-FRANÇOIS LÉPINE AND CBC

I just finished reading the autobiography of Jean-François Lépine: ON THE LINE OF FIRE. 
A book that tells the story of Radio-Canada since 1971 using the path as a journalist of Jean-Francois Lepine who was one of the pillars of Radio-Canada for forty-two years. 
One could compare Jean-François to Anderson Cooper of CNN as their story has so much in common. First, the two lived at the beginning of their career, the suicide of their brother from who they were very close and the two have become after symbols of international journalism. One might assume that the suicide of brothers influenced the careers of two journalists. 
But the story of Jean François takes a good view at Quebec and the transformation of Radio-Canada in the last decade. One has to clearly understand that the company is now "dying" and that we can question its existence in the medium term. Lépine wants a shift that would save the CBC and that would bring it in its leading role of journalism in Canada but there are questions about the objectivity of Lépine when he obviously loved and still loves deeply his old employer. The book of Jean-François is an interesting chronicle of his career but also his end career. The chapter on the rejection of his candidature by the president Hubert Lacroix to replace Sylvain Lafrance is particularly illuminating on the management style of CBC and this chapter opens questions about the real plans for the future of the CBC. 
Personally I knew Jean-François in 1977-78 at the National Assembly of Quebec while we were both parliamentary correspondents and his story reflects well the years I knew him. 
It was the old good time ...

The TV host OPRAH WINFREY has just published a new collection of her thoughts under the title: WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE.
The book is filled with reflections on the meaning of life, the habits of society as consumption or health and other topics of human behavior. The book is a sort of collection of the best chronicles she wrote over the past 14 years in her magazine.
A book to read and keep on a bedside table!

SHOOTOUT IN OTTAWA AND THE COLLEGE BRÉBEUF / ANGELS OF EVIL AND ANGELS OF GOOD...

Ottawa shooting highlights more than ever the parallel existence of evil with good. 
Late Tuesday afternoon, October 21, 2014, following the efforts by the former journalist Roger Sylvain and the distribution Friday, October 18 of a letter-press release, the Brebeuf College confirmed that he had done wrong and offered to rehire Professor Jacqueline Laurent Auger fired for making movies naked in 1960. All the Quebec media have recognized the fault of the college and if there is a hero in this story it is that Roger Sylvain because of his goodness and greatness of soul as he had taken the case in hand and launched a cry for help to his friends journalists. Something he has also done very often in the past for other artists he considered to be in a moral, financial or physical need. One could say that the event at Brébeuf had very little importance in the world and this is absolutely true, but this small gesture became great later when all of Quebec began to morally support the Professor. For the space of a weekend, the spirit of good dominated in the minds of Quebecers. 
The day after the conclusion of this small gesture of Roger Sylvain, Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, the Ottawa gunman killed a soldier by firing two bullets in his back and then attacked the Parliament of Canada to be shot by the Sergeant-at-Arms during the shooting in the lobby. This event was bigger than the one at Brébeuf but with the same result. The feeling of the event (this time the feeling of evil) lived in the mind of an entire population, all around in North American if not all around the world. 
The obvious conclusion is that Rogers Sylvain represent the forces of good while the crazy killer represent the forces of evil. But what is less obvious is how to recognize the forces of good from those evil before the action take place? The question is impossible to answer and you just have to hope that the "forces of good" will eventually overcome the"forces of evil". 
The society of today has become very large and universal. There are no more borders because of the internet and communications are thereby been rendered democratic more than ever in history. If once we could physically identify the different political or religious ideologies by country and people, this is no longer true today. But do not mistake either. It was not easy to handle the good and evil in the last century. The history books show us that even a Hitler, in a very low-tech era when communication was by radio and print newspapers, had several allies who saw him as a kind of economic savior of Germany. His autobiography Mein Kampf published in 1926 was a best seller in many countries of the world and the number of copies distributed is estimated at 10 million. One may wonder what Hitler would have done that if he had lived with the Internet as a tool... 
It took the war for the forces of good to take over over and after 1945 the world was able to live a few years of peaceful life. But it did not last because there was then the Vietnam War and many other wars and tragedies like the September 11, 2001. The evil has often taken the role of leader of the struggle. 
The conclusion is that good and evil have always co-existed and always will co-exist. One day, the good dominates while another day it is evil. You just can hope that your individual destiny is more privileged by the gods of good and one must make every effort to recognize and encourage the "angels of good" as Roger Sylvain, Kevin Vickers (Sergeant-at-Arms of the Canadian Parliament) and other individuals like them when we have the chance to discover their existence. 
For the "angels of evil",  beware of them!

ROGER SYLVAIN - THE SUPERHERO WHO FACED THE COLLEGE BRÉBEUF

Brebeuf College leaders have fallen flag to the dismissal of Professor Jacqueline Laurent Auger and if they reconfirmed their decision about the dismissal on Monday morning, they changed their mind late Tuesday afternoon (October 21) and they admitted their wrong. The College apologized for unjustified dismissal and offered to resume Jacqueline Laurent Auger. The consequences could have been worse and dramatic because after her dismissal, the professor and artist who is 73 years old had considered suicide because of the injustice she lived. Her reasoning: she was no longer needed on this earth... 
If however there is a hero in this story it is the former journalist and himself an artist, Roger Sylvain. The latter is a kind of public protector of artists whose careers are now out of the limelight but who knew the hours of glory. Congratulations and admiration for his efforts should go to Roger Sylvain. It was through his encouragement and advice that Jacqueline Laurent Auger was defended. Roger was like the guy in the schoolyard who rises to protect and defend the weak than other bully. 
Firing a professor is a small event in itself but this event is an example of abuse and injustice for which a good Samaritan comes to transform the situation. Roger and Jacqueline were also lucky because their story could have, and should have, died early. However, four factors have influenced the opposite outcome: 
1. the many contacts of Roger Sylvain in the media; 
2. important and historic reputation of Brébeuf College in Quebec; 
3. the scattering power of social media; 
4. pure luck that there was few media events during the weekend of October 18 because if the news release of Jacqueline had been issued, for example, the day of a shooting at the Canadian Parliament, attention to Brébeuf would has been nonexistent. 
The personal story of Roger Sylvain is that of an artist and journalist from Quebec who is constantly very passionate! If he is 68 years old, one feel him to be a young first who wants to change the world. His autobiography is exciting and available on the internet.

A STORY FOR PARIS MATCH - THE COLLEGE BRÉBEUF ...

Negative reactions towards the Director of Brebeuf College in Montreal and his dismissal of the professor and former actress Jacqueline Laurent Auger continue to occupy all the Quebec media, conventional as social. The least we can say is that the College is experiencing its worst public relations crisis since the time of military conscription and political battle between General Lafleche and Jean Drapeau in 1942 while the former actress Jacqueline Laurent Auger has now become more popular than ever! 
One will have to wait and see in the coming days if the director resigns, or if the College recommit Jacqueline... 
The problem is not so much the firing of Jacqueline Laurent Auger as a person who was an unknown 73-year-old before this weekend of October 18, 2014, but the scandal is the firing by an institution of scale as Brebeuf College who fire a professor because she was an actress and had made ​​nude films in Paris in 1960.  
The story is worthy of Paris Match, because let's not forget that all the great Quebecois characters have studied at the college Brébeuf from the Trudeau father and son (Pierre E. and Justin) to Peladeau also father and son (Peter and PKP)... 
A perfect story involving sex, stars characters and a great legendary institution in Quebec. It also combines the historical past to the present with a touch of Paris. 
To take the weather speeches, here we have the perfect storm!

PIERRE KARL PÉLADEAU AND HIS MISSION...

People ask me if I support Pierre-Karl Peladeau in his political mission? Many tell me that I should absolutely support him because I was the assistant of his father... 
My answer is not no, neither yes! 
Pierre Peladeau father was a great entrepreneur but not necessarily a great independentist. 
Proof, one of his best friends was Brian Mulroney. René Lévesque was also a great friend of Pierre Peladeau. The founder of Quebecor does not dislike Canada, but he hated specifically Pierre E. Trudeau because he had known him in college. 
Pierre Peladeau's dream was to expand his empire across the country and around the world much like Paul Desmarais, Rupert Murdoch or even Conrad Black in newspapers. He was most proud of his printing plants in place in the United States and France. 
PKP is something else. First he is an heir which is the opposite of his father who was a builder contractor. PKP manages a legacy as a financier. 
Personally, I left Quebecor after his father's death and I never spoke again to PKP directly thereafter. I had kept in touch with her sister Isabelle who recently died in a strange and tragic way. I am neither for nor against PKP although I know him very well, having worked with him for several years, but I'm not his friend in any way. By the way, I know better Julie Snyder. My best woman friend was also the best friend of Julie for almost 20 years... 
Do will I vote for PKP? I will vote for the best candidate running in the next election, according to my convictions. Do PKP is a good politician? According to me PKP was an excellent manager at Quebecor and his strategy to divest from printing to develop VIDEOTRON was brilliant. Is he a good politician? Still according to me, I think the love of politics by PKP is a kind of leisure and he tries his luck as one will do at the lottery. Does can he win? His father had always refused to do active politics and he would not seek government contracts. Too many questions and no freedom of action explained to me the founder of Quebecor!
